Black Sesame Hojicha Latte
Black sesame and hojicha is a combination I discovered by accident and have been making intentionally ever since. The toasty, nutty quality of black sesame paste and the roasted warmth of hojicha share the same register of flavour and they deepen each other when combined. This is a drink for cold mornings when you want something that feels grounding.
Ingredients
Hojicha Base
- 3g hojicha powder
- 30g hot water (175°F)
- 10g maple syrup
- 100ml milk of your choice
- 1 tbsp black sesame paste
Method
- 1Sift hojicha powder into a small bowl.
- 2Pour boiling water into a teacup to cool it to 175°F, then pour into the tea bowl with the hojicha.
- 3Add maple syrup and whisk vigorously for 15 seconds in an "M" shape until smooth and frothy.
- 4Stir black sesame paste into the milk and whisk until fully dissolved and creamy.
- 5Add ice to a glass, pour in the black sesame milk, then slowly pour the hojicha on top.
Tips & Notes
Black sesame paste can be found at most Asian grocery stores. For a stronger sesame flavour, lightly toast the sesame seeds before blending. This latte works beautifully iced or hot depending on the season.
